Twenty poems inspired by the wood cuts and engravings of Tirzah Garwood
This collection consists of twenty woodcuts and wood engravings which Tirzah Garwoodproduced between 1926 and 1932. Each image is accompanied by a poem.
Technically brilliant, most of Garwood’s images are witty observations of middle class life in which she gently mocks the class distinctions, conventional gender roles and polite social etiquette with which she grew up. In fact, she often includes herself and close relatives in her work. She also seems to delight in portraying animals in some of her images.
The crocodile
Where are they off to these crocodiling girls
in their uniforms pressed and clean?
To a town café for lunch if
their refectory’s closed today?
Or to the theatre to see a play
they’re studying: As you like it, perhaps?
Or to church for weekly choir practice
a mile or two from school?
Obedience and discipline are de rigueur
so keeping in step is crucial
but one girl’s teasing a little black dog
and another may be pregnant?
